The Society of Biology is a single unified voice for biology. We aim to represent all who are committed to biology in academia, industry, education and research; to facilitate the promotion and translation of advances in biological science for national and international benefit, and to engage and encourage public interest in the life sciences.
With an effective membership of over 80,000, we are uniquely placed to represent the wider bioscience community and serve the public interest. We are committed to ensuring that
we provide Government and other policy makers - including funders of biological education and research – with a distinct point of access to authoritative, independent, and evidence-based opinion, representative of the widest range of bioscience disciplines. We provide support to teachers and second level students and publish the Biologist and Journal of Biological Education. Under our Royal Charter we are charged to represent UK biologists and biology as a whole. We are a registered charity.
We are the UK's Centre for Excellence for integrated research in land and freshwater ecosystems. As such, we address some of the world's most fundamental and complex environmental challenges through working in close partnership with the wider scientific community, government departments and agencies, as well as the private sector. Our unique combination of wide-ranging scientific expertise, long-term environmental monitoring and state-of-the-art research infrastructure enables us to deliver practical solutions for achieving environmental sustainability. There are 340 scientists and 110 support staff working across five sites around the UK and 160 active field sites. Our Director chairs the Partnership for European Environmental Research, which is made up of the seven biggest environmental research centres in Europe and plays a key role in advising the European Union. We are independent from governments and businesses, with the majority of our funding coming from the Natural Environmental Research Council.

The British Ecological Society is a learned society and a registered charity. Established in 1913 by academics to promote and foster the study of ecology in its widest sense, the Society currently has around 4,000 members spread around the world. The core activities are the publication of results of research in ecology, the development of scientific meetings and the promotion of ecological awareness through the education at all levels. The Society serves as an important link between policymakers, the media and the ecological community. Independently and with affiliated organisations, the Society works to inform policymakers and the journalists in order to promote ecological science and its use. The Society's aim is to advance ecology and to make it count.
